If I had to choose between my wife and my putter... well, I’d miss her.

True riches

Make me want to obey you rather than to be rich Psalm 119:36

This weekend of the Sanford Cricket series takes place. That is a 3 hour cricket match in which the winning team will earn $20million. Now there is a lot of silly money in sport but a totally meaningless match with that amount of prize money takes silliness to a new level. I am not blaming the players - I am sure that if I had the talent, I would be there!

The timing of the game is ironic as it comes shortly after the collapse of banks around the world with some people losing all their savings.

The Psalmist understands the desire for money - I rejoice in following your statutes as one rejoices in great riches (v14). He also understands that being rich is not the purpose of life and that wealth cannot ultimately bring happiness, as the following statements show

The law from your mouth is more precious to me than thousands of pieces of silver and gold. (v72)

I love your commands more than gold, more than pure gold (v 127)

Turn my heart toward your statutes and not toward selfish gain (v 36).

Turn my eyes away from worthless things; preserve my life according to your word (v37)

So as the game takes place this weekend let us hope that England win the $20 million! But more importantly let us pray that we would keep money and God's word in their rightful place.
