If I had to choose between my wife and my putter... well, I’d miss her.
What do you want?
In fairy stories the hero is often offered the chance to have a wish (or even 3 wishes) fulfilled. If God appeared to you and offered you a wish? What would you wish for? To score the winning goal in the World Cup final? A win for West Ham on Saturday? A new contract? To be injury free? None of these are bad things to wish for.
The Psalmist expressed his this way. One thing I ask of the Lord, this is what I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life Psalm 27:4.
There is nothing wrong with desiring success in our sport or in asking God for it. But even the greatest sporting success will pass and be forgotten. Living in God's presence is something that no one can take away from us. The Psalmist asked to dwell in God's house all the days of his life. But, living in God's presence comes with an eternal guarantee! If we live in his presence on earth, we will continue to live in his presence beyond death.
As we operate in the world of sport, we are to do it as people who are living each day in the presence of God. We are to practise the presence of God in sport as in the rest of life.
