"Football is not a matter of life and death, it is more important than that."

A lamp for my feet

Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path Psalm 119:105

Psalm 119 is by far the longest Psalm, which probably puts a lot of people off reading it! However, it is like a goldmine, full of nuggets to help us in our daily life.

Christians often want guidance – who should I marry and which job should I have - are two of the biggest issues about which people seek guidance. It is interesting that the Bible says nothing about which job I should have but a great deal about how I should behave at work once I have the job!

When the Psalmist says that God’s word sheds light on our path, he is doesn’t mean personal guidance about which car (or chariot) to buy or where to live but moral guidance about how to live our lives with integrity and to be righteous in our dealings with people. Derek Tidball says that “God’s word is the Psalmist’s indispensable moral compass”. Living by God’s word does not happen automatically. It requires effort on our behalf. We have to:

Meditate on it (v97-99);
Obey it (v100);
Follow it (v102)
Learn from it (v108);
Remember it (v109).

And it is not a one-off, we are to keep to God’s word to the very end (v112). In training, competition and just life, we are to take our standards from God’s word and live it out.
