"God answers my prayers everywhere except on the golf-course."
Trustworthy 2
The saying is trustworthy: If anyone aspires to the office of church leader, he desires a noble task. 1 Timothy 3:1In the second of Paul’s trustworthy sayings Paul talks about the ambition to be a leader. (Remember Paul is not saying that the rest of his statements can be ignored but that these five are specially important and worth reflecting on).
If there is an opportunity in your church to play a leadership role and you would like to do it, Paul says that is OK. No need for false modesty and humility.
That is the good news! Paul then goes on (verses 2-7) to list the qualities that he expects in a leader. They include:
above reproach,
faithful to their spouse,
temperate,
self-controlled,
respectable,
hospitable,
not violent but gentle,
not quarrelsome,
not a lover of money,
have a good reputation with outsiders.
It is a good check list to see how we are doing in our Christian maturity. As you go to the sports club, to training, to the office today, how many of those characteristics do you display?
