Trustworthy 1

The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost. 1 Timothy 1:15

Five times in his pastoral letters (1 and 2 Timothy and Titus) Paul used the phrase a “trustworthy saying”. Twice he adds that these sayings are “deserving of full acceptance”. What does that mean? He is not saying that the rest of his statements are throwaways — only that these five are distinctively fundamental, foundational, and firm. They are worth reflecting on. Here Paul is simply expressing the heart of the gospel. Jesus came into the world to save sinners. You may have heard the rhyme:
if your greatest need was information, God would have sent a teacher.
If your greatest need was technology, God would have sent a scientist.
If your greatest need was money, God would have sent a financial expert.
If your greatest need was pleasure and fun, God would have sent an entertainer.
But our greatest need is forgiveness. Therefore God sent a saviour!

We were lost and destined for judgment and destruction so Jesus came and died for us to rescue us.

Of course, Paul wasn’t the foremost sinner but his humility is an example and challenge to us all.
