If I had to choose between my wife and my putter... well, I’d miss her.

The hope we profess

Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. Hebrews 10:23

I recently came across the following expression: “A job you cannot quit, a dream you cannot give up on, a calling that will chase you forever”. Many of us feel that way about our sport. Two themes run through Andre Agassi’s book Open: I hate tennis, I cannot give it up. He hated how tennis had dominated his life since he was a child to the exclusion of almost everything else. But he could not let go of it.

Anyone who is a professional will understand that dilemma. There are days when you could walk away from it all but you would walk back the next day. There are too many hopes, unfulfilled dreams, things to achieve.

But the phrase “A job you cannot quit, a dream you cannot give up on, a calling that will chase you forever” may also apply to how we see our faith in Jesus. It can be hard to be a Christian but the writer to the Hebrews calls us to “hold unswervingly to the hope we profess”. At times everything seems against us but we are to hold on to our faith in Jesus.

Many of us believe that God has placed us in the world of sport – to use our talents for his glory and to be his representative in our team or club. That is our calling.

And remember – especially when it seems tough – that “he who promised is faithful”
