If I had to choose between my wife and my putter... well, I’d miss her.

Psalm 37 Part 1

I have seen a wicked and ruthless man flourishing like a luxuriant native tree. Psalm 37:35

Wouldn’t life be simple and straightforward if “good” people were successful and “wicked” people were not! All races should be won by Christians! The Psalms often address the issue of why is it that the wicked seem to be successful.

Part of the answer can be found in Soren Kierkegaard’s words “Life can only be understood backwards but must be lived forwards”. As we live in this world but in the light of eternity we will understand things better.

The answer that Psalm 37 gives is summed up by these words in verse 13 “The Lord laughs at the wicked, for he knows their day is coming”. The message is underlined in a series of poignant images. The wicked will - be destroyed… will be no more... will not be found... their power will be broken. The Scottish poet, Douglas Dunn, writes that the flash cars of the rich will one day be “pressed into squares of scrap”.

Judgement is coming and the Psalm makes a clear distinction between those who love God and those who don’t: “for the power of the wicked will be broken, but the LORD upholds the righteous” (verse 17). At times when life is hard, it is a help to remember that God is control and that ultimately he will act with justice.
