"Football is not a matter of life and death, it is more important than that."

Bill Shankly, Liverpool Football manager

Psalm 46 again

God says, ‘Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.’ Psalm 46:10

Sportspeople tend to be activists. We like to be doing something. Being still can be a challenge. Yet it is the essence of our faith: “Be still and know that I am God”. Sportspeople are judged on their achievements and performances. Athletes are defined by their times and distances.

In the spiritual realm, it is not about what we have done but about what Jesus has done to save us. Our part is to be still, know and believe.

The second half of the verse reminds us that whatever is happening now in our seemingly godless society, a day is coming when God’s name will be acknowledged throughout the world.

The following verse says: “The Lord Almighty is with us; The God of Jacob is our fortress (V11)”. This reminds who God is. He is Almighty but at the same time He is personal. He is the God of Jacob and he is our God.

Take some time today to be still and know that he is God and to reflect on how that knowledge changes your perspective on the day.
