"It matters a great deal who is going to win, but not at all who won"
Prayer
I urge, then, first of all that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone. 1 Timothy 2:1OK Paul, for whom should I pray. Everyone! That gives us lots of scope.
These verses are striking in how inclusive they are: Jesus gave himself as a ransom for ALL PEOPLE (v 6); God wants ALL PEOPLE to be saved (v4).
As we pray for the world of sport, how do we apply these verses. Here are my suggestions.
Pray for Christians involved in high level sport, that their faith would be solid in a pressured environment - players, coaches, administrators. And tell them you are praying for them.
Pray for “all those in authority” (v2) in the world of sport. The minister responsibly for sport, the head of the Olympic Committee, the president and chief executive of the major sports federations in your country.
Pray for sport in your town – local clubs, local officials.
Pray for Christians who are involved in local sport; for their lifestyle and witness.
I am convinced that an important aspect of winning the world of sport for Christ is praying regularly for it.
