"I jump into a sand pit for a living"

Jonathan Edwards, World record triple-jumper

Intro

Psalm 119 is famous! It is the longest of the 150 Psalms - with 176 verses. Much has been lost in translation. In the Hebrew it is a complex acrostic with a section of 8 verses beginning successively with each letter of the Hebrew alphabet. Overall the Psalm is a prayer for salvation which focuses on one great theme - the word of God. Over 170 of the verses contain a prayer. It may be the longest Psalm but we shall see over the next few weeks that it is also one of the richest.

The Psalmist uses some very powerful images to express how he looks on God's word:

He thinks about it (v6)

He treasures it (v11)

He respects it (v30)

He longs for it (v40)

He relies on it (v43)

He studies it (v78)

He obeys it (v72)

Many people see the Bible as a dull and ancient book. It is in reality a living and dynamic book which addresses life and helps us deal with difficult situations - on the sports field as anywhere else.

This is the first of a series on Psalm 119.
