If I had to choose between my wife and my putter... well, I’d miss her.

Fellowship

We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. 1 John 1:3

Fellowship is a word we often use yet find hard to define. Dictionaries use words like friendly relationship, companionship, common interest. Fellowship is like a triangle with a horizontal and a vertical dimension. Our (horizontal) fellowship with each other depends on our (vertical) relationship with God.

John states clearly that our Christian fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. But on that basis, we can have fellowship with each other. In the last year I have been privileged to attend Bible Studies at Diamond League Athletics events. Over 50 athletes from nine countries have attended. The amazing thing is that it does not matter who comes or from which country – the group works and we have fellowship with each other because we all have fellowship with God first. Even athletes who will compete against each other the next day are happy to fellowship together.

If you are privileged to have a fellow Christian in your team or training group, treasure them. Enjoy fellowship together. If not, you can still have the fellowship with the Father and with Jesus.

John adds a little sting in the tail; fellowship is a privilege but also a responsibility. “If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth”. Having fellowship with God needs to affect the way we live.
