"God answers my prayers everywhere except on the golf-course."

Billy Graham

Christian character

But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness. 1 Tim 6:11

Paul has been writing about the dangers of being obsessed with money and other sins. He tells Timothy to “flee from all this”. But avoiding the negative is not enough. He is to “pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness”.

Righteousness. Righteousness is one of the chief attributes of God and we are called to live our lives in a morally right way. But righteousness is God’s gift to us. We read in Romans 4: "Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness."

Godliness – one definition is obeying and respecting God
Faith – is the essence of our relationship with God. We need to believe in him and trust him – even when everything seems to be going wrong.
Love – God is love, according to 1 John, and it is an essential part of our relationship with God that we love him and love our neighbour as our self.
Endurance – it has been said that the Christian life is a marathon, not a sprint. We need endurance to help us keep going when life gets tough. We need to have faith and be righteous when things are hard
Gentleness. Dictionary definitions use words like - kind, soft, calm, sweet, tender, mild-mannered and tolerant.

Let us try to put this into practice in our daily lives
