"God answers my prayers everywhere except on the golf-course."
Ambassadors
We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. 1 Corinthians 5:20The idea that we are Christ’s ambassadors well sums up our role as Christians in the world of sport. We are there to represent Christ.
As we press the analogy, an ambassador is a very privileged position. An ambassador is a role of honour. An ambassador is not there to give his own opinions but to express the policy of his country. At the same time an ambassador is there to take the flak from those who have an issue with the government of the ambassador’s country.
Similarly we should never forget the unbelievable privilege it is to be Jesus Christ’s representative in our sport. Similarly we should not be surprised when at times we find flak – aimed at God – directed at us.
As we train/compete/coach/administer, as we talk to colleagues and opponents, let us remember that we do so as Christ’s ambassadors. That should make a real difference to how we conduct ourselves.
