"It matters a great deal who is going to win, but not at all who won"

Willie John McBride, Irish Rugby player

An amazing invitation

My heart has heard you say, “Come and talk with me.” And my heart responds, “LORD, I am coming.” Psalm 27:8 NLT

Sometimes reading a verse in a different translation brings out a new meaning. I love the simplicity of the NLT. The idea of God inviting us to come and talk to him is mind-blowing. So often we make prayer complicated.

As a child I used to wonder why, when speaking to God, people used different and special words. It was like having to learn a new language in order to approach God. Compare Jesus inviting us to call God “Father” (Abba is really more Daddy).

A colleague of mine was once helping a new convert to pray for the first time. He said: “Speak to God as you would speak to me”. The person started his first prayer: “Morning God. How are you today?”

All of us find prayer hard at times and struggle to know how to express our deep desires. Sometimes the simplicity of a “Morning God” can get us started.

When we talk to a close friend, we can be ourselves. We can let the mask slip. We can speak honestly about how we are feeling, our struggles etc.

God understands our anxieties about 2020 and even about 2021.

How should we respond? “LORD, I am coming.”
